The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's historic rivalry.

There were concerns that Cummins might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the prospects of being involved.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a key capacity. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss three Australian summers in four years.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the contest.

The selector indicated that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and stated that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs regardless. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to take a cautious route."
