The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank
The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.
The number of positions added to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.
Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown
Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
